The complete guide to mercenaries, who to choose according to your class or your damage types, all the possibilities and optimizations!

How the guide works

This guide provides two ways to choose your mercenary, the first giving you all the possibilities of mercenaries and the second starting from your build to help you choose it. Please note this article is a complement to the in-depth guides, in particular for the calculation of the levels and equipment of the other mercenaries, which you will find on our page Diablo 2 resurrected.

Mercenary Rogue Act 1

Here is the interest of the Rogue:

  • stay at a distance, he won't commit suicide like melee mercenaries
  • good damage
  • many choices of auras with the weapon
  • slowed down your enemies with cold, which I recommend unless you play with cold damage

The Rogue's equipment for leveling and before the Endgame:

  • Armor: Treachery Rune Word
  • Helmet: Tal Rasha or Crown of Thieves
  • Bows:
    • Insight: aura mana regeneration and damage
    • Harmony: movement aura and damage

The Rogue equipment for the Endgame:

  • Armor: Fortitude Rune Word
  • Helmet: Face of Andariel or Veil of Night with Ice
  • Bows:
    • Ice: cold aura and damage

Desert Mercenary Act 2

Desert mercenary equipment for leveling and before the Endgame:

  • Armor: Treachery Rune Word
  • Helmet: Tal Rasha or Crown of Thieves
  • Battle Axe:
    • Insight: aura mana regeneration and damage
    • A unique weapon if possible ethereal

The Desert Mercenary's equipment for the Endgame:

  • Armor: Fortitude Rune Word
  • Helmet: Face of Andariel
  • Battle Axe:
    • Infinity: lowers enemy elemental resistances and defense
    • Pride Pride: Aura of Concentration
    • Doom: ice aura and damage

Mercenary Mage Act 3

Here is the interest of the mage mercenary:

  • Lightning: damage and static field
  • Ice: damage and control spells
  • Fire: damage and fire enchantment

Desert mercenary equipment for leveling and before the Endgame:

  • Armor: vipermagic
  • Helmet: Lore
  • Sword and Shield: Spirit

The Desert Mercenary's equipment for the Endgame:

  • Cold Damage
    • Nightwing
    • Chain of Honor or Ormus (note the +x does not work)
    • Spirit x2
    • Jewels of cold as soon as possible
  • Fire damage
    • Wisdom, the new runic word
    • Chain of Honor or Ormus +3 Fireball or Enchant
    • Spirit x2 or Phoenix
    • Fire Jewels ASAP
  • Lightning Damage
    • Griffon
    • Chain of Honor or Ormus +3 Lightning
    • Spirit x2
    • Lightning Jewels ASAP

Barbarian Mercenary Act 5

Here is the interest of the mercenary of the barbarian mercenary:

  • very good resistance
  • acceptable damage
  • uses Battle Cry which lowers enemies defense and physical damage

Barbarian equipment for leveling and before the Endgame:

  • Armor: Treachery Rune Word
  • Helmet: Tal Rasha or Crown of Thieves
  • Sword:
    • Unwavering Will
    • A unique weapon if possible ethereal

The barbarian's equipment for the Endgame:

  • Armor: Fortitude Rune Word
  • Helmet: Face of Andariel or Arreat
  • Sword:
    • Plague: if you play poison or even elemental (cheaper than Infinity)
    • Last Wish: Aura of Power
    • Breath of the Dying or Grief: Damage

You need mana

Leveling / start of season:

  • take the one on which you have a 4-hole weapon!

Mid/Endgame:

  • you need power aura or ice aura, mercenary act 2 with Insight
  • you need ice or fire arrow, mercenary act 1 with Insight

You play summons

Leveling / start of season:

  • Act 2 with Power

Mid / Endgame, in order of power:

  • Act 2 with Power and Infinity
  • Act 1 with Mist or Faith

You play physical damage

Leveling / start of season:

  • Immune management: mercenary act 3 Fire to enchant, Cold for slowdowns, Lightning for bosses
  • Damage Buff: Mercenary Act 2 with Might

Mid / Endgame, in order of power:

  • Act 2 with Power and Infinity or Pride
  • Act 1 with Mist
  • Act 3 for the immune or even Act 5 for the debuff

You play fire damage

Leveling / start of season:

  • Immune management: mercenary act 3 Cold or Lightning, act 1 ice arrows or act 2 ice power / aura

Mid / Endgame, in order of power:

  • Act 2 with Infinity
  • Act 1 or 3, or even Act 5 with Plague

You play cold damage

Leveling / start of season:

  • Immune management: mercenary act 3 Fire or Lightning, act 1 fire arrows or act 2 power

Mid / Endgame, in order of power:

  • Act 2 with Infinity
  • Act 1 or 3, or even Act 5 with Plague

You play lightning damage

Leveling / start of season:

  • Immune management: mercenary act 3 Ice or Lightning, act 1 ice arrows or act 2 ice power / aura

Mid / Endgame, in order of power:

  • Act 2 with Infinity
  • Act 1 or 3, or even Act 5 with Plague

You play poison damage

Leveling / start of season:

  • Management of immunes: mercenary act 1, 2 or 3, to choose according to your preferences

Mid / Endgame, in order of power:

  •  mercenary act 1, 2 or 3, to choose according to your preferences
  • Act 5 with Plague

You play magic damage

Leveling / start of season:
